The Stranger in our Midst

The story of the cross shows the paradox of one totally abandoned by God though fully indwelt by God. God is to be found in the depths of the estrangement and despair of the innocent. He is to be found in the dignity and integrity of the stranger. God identifies with the stranger who has been victimized and violated. He raises up and affirms those who have unjustly been cast down. An encounter with the stranger forces us to reach beyond our own identity to grasp our common dignity as creatures made in the image of God.
