Children and teachers are heading back to school, the houses on our street enduring months of remodeling are seeing an end in sight as the landscapers complete the jobs, and our dot on the map is enjoying some relief from the heat for a few days. It is the end of August when change is in the air. South Texas doesn't get to look forward to "fall in the air" for yet another month, but there is change none the less. The tourists pack their tubes and trunks away for another year, families return from vacations, the room is a little fuller on Sunday mornings, and weekly activities move from the relaxation of summer to the schedule of a new school year. High school football has begun, the band can be heard practicing from our neighborhood, and some have already mentioned 4 months until Christmas! As I meet with people to talk about life as it is happening, needing to back up to past experiences and then walking forward on the journey with them wherever it may take us, I see the ever constant presence of change. Jobs, homes, schools, relationships, finances, health, thoughts, feelings, dreams, beliefs--like the revolving door at the hotel or office building, they are turning upon us, sometimes with our own push of the door, but often times at the hands of others. The wisest of all said, "Forget about what's happened; don't keep going over old history. Something brand new is bursting out! Don't you see it?" Change in our pockets itches to be spent. But that we could embrace change as enthusiastically and with arms flung wide open like we do when the wind brings cooler temperatures and the fluttering of leaves as a cold front moves in, anticipating good things ahead. Next time I see a revolving door, instead of passing by, I think I'll step inside and take a turn or two.
